Chocolate Avocado Mousse

This recipe is definitely one for the skeptics. The people who don’t believe that you can create healthy, natural delicious foods that are at the same time delicious. This mousse not only tastes like chocolate mousse, but has the same creamy smooth texture and I think that is what makes it a winner. With a lot of healthy recreations you can often get similar to the non-healthy version’s taste of texture, but it is quite hard to get both. This recipe does, so try it out on all those doubting your healthy ways.

I have a wonderful friend whose family owns an avocado orchard, so when he comes home from university we end up in abundance of avocado’s which I will never complain about. It can go with so many things and is so tasty. I have made this mousse once before, and really enjoyed it. This time it was actually my boyfriend who requested it as together we are making a big effort to reduce down on refined sweets, as we do enjoy our treats together. So I was more than happy to oblige in trying to create a healthy dessert. This was a combination of recipes from the Whole Pantry App and Secret Squirrel Foods, both amazing foodies who I admire. This is a fun recipe to make, and my boyfriend and I have a great time in the kitchen creating this together. For my version of Chocolate Avocado Mousse you will need:

1 avocado
2 ripe bananas
1/4 cup of cacao
A drizzle of honey or vegan sweetener (how much is really dependent on taste)
1-2 teaspoons of cinnamon
A splash of almond milk to achieve your desired texture

Simply combine all the ingredients in a food processor, and blend until smooth. Scrap down the sides a couple of times and after five minutes you will be left with a beautiful smooth mousse. Definitely have a taste along the way and adjust the sweetener to taste – those of us with a sweet tooth may want a bit more than others!

It is perfectly acceptable to scoop this out of the food processor with your fingers and eat the whole bunch, however for those who are more forward thinking it also tastes great chilled. In the words of my boyfriend ‘wow it is amazing’ and ‘actually tastes like chocolate mousse’ – so you heard it first from the non-believer and he absolutely loves it. We have already made another batch. The texture is so creamy, light and most importantly smooth. You can’t really taste the avocado at all in the end.

As a five minute snack when you are craving something sweet, or dressed up as a lovely dessert this recipe is great and I recommend trying it!
